What Counts as a Dental Emergency?

If something doesn't feel right, it is always best to get it checked. Early care can prevent minor concerns from becoming bigger problems later. Here are some common reasons patients seek emergency dental care.

  • Cracked or broken tooth
  • Severe tooth pain or sensitivity
  • Swelling or signs of an abscess
  • Knocked-out or loose tooth
  • Gum infection or bleeding
  • Lost filling or crown

When you are in pain, you should never have to wait. That's why we offer same-day emergency appointments. You can call us, text, or book online, whatever works best for you. Our goal is to see you quickly and help you feel better as soon as possible.

Please note: If you experience a severe injury, uncontrolled bleeding, difficulty breathing, severe facial trauma, or a life-threatening emergency, please call 911 immediately.

Helpful Tips Until We See You

While you are on your way to your emergency appointment, here are a few quick tips:

Knocked-Out Tooth:

Time is critical. Handle the affected tooth by its crown, not the root, and gently rinse it without scrubbing. Keep it moist by placing it in milk or holding it in your cheek. The sooner you seek emergency dental care, the better the chance of saving it.

Severe Swelling or Abscess:

Swelling that spreads to your jaw, neck, or face can indicate a serious infection, so it's important to seek immediate care. If the swelling is severe or affects your breathing or swallowing, head to your nearest emergency room.

Severe Toothache:

Rinse your mouth gently with warm salt water and avoid hot, cold, or sweet foods and beverages. Do not place aspirin directly on your gums, as this can cause gum tissue damage and irritation.

Something Stuck Between Teeth:

Gently try to remove the object using dental floss. Never use a sharp instrument, and avoid forcing anything that doesn't come free easily.

Chipped Tooth:

Save any fragments of the tooth you can find and rinse your mouth gently with lukewarm water. A tooth crack or chip can provide an entryway for harmful bacteria to the inside of the tooth, which is why it is important to seek prompt care.

Lost or Broken Crown or Filling:

A missing crown or filling can leave your tooth exposed and sensitive. Cover the area with dental wax or a small piece of sugar-free gum, and avoid chewing on that side until we can see you.

Cracked or Fractured Tooth:

Rinse your mouth gently with warm water and avoid chewing on that side. If needed, cold compresses can help reduce swelling.

Uncontrolled Bleeding:

Apply firm, steady pressure to the area using a clean cloth or gauze. If bleeding does not slow after 10 to 15 minutes, head to your nearest hospital emergency room.
